Grass Valley Healthcare Center was recognized as the third largest nursing home in Nevada County in the first quarter of 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported.

The facility provided 86 available beds, aligning with the Nevada County average during the first quarter of 2026, and cared for an average daily census of 80.3 residents.

The Center received an overall CMS rating of 3 out of 5, which is slightly below the California state average of 3.2 for nursing facilities.

Golden Empire led Nevada County in available beds during the quarter with 148, while Crystal Ridge Care Center followed in second place, offering 99 beds.

Grass Valley Healthcare Center reported no fines or penalties as of the first quarter of 2026.

Nevada County, California, had four for-profit nursing homes in total.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show that the senior population in the United States continues to rise as younger age groups decrease in number. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and older grew by 13%, while those under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the last century, the older adult population expanded from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study indicates that nearly half of adults 65 and older, or about 28 million people, are likely to need long-term services and support, with projections that over a third could eventually require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
