Today, Congressman Tom McClintock announced significant progress for House Resolution 166, which advocates for a democratic, secular, and nonnuclear Republic of Iran. The resolution has garnered support from a majority of the House of Representatives, with 136 Republicans and 83 Democrats co-sponsoring it.
Congressman McClintock stated, “I am pleased to announce that H. Res. 166 supporting a democratic, secular, and nonnuclear Republic of Iran has crossed an important threshold.” He emphasized the bipartisan nature of the support: “This truly bi-partisan and broad-based House majority endorses the general principles propounded by Iranian democracy groups.”
The resolution aligns with the ten-point plan proposed by the National Council of Resistance of Iran. It calls for universal voting rights, free elections, a market economy, separation of religion and state, equality across gender, religious, and ethnic lines; peaceful foreign relations; Middle East peace; and a nonnuclear Iran. It also condemns terrorism by the Iranian regime as well as its regional proxy wars and internal oppression.
McClintock highlighted international support for these principles: “Over 4,000 parliamentarians worldwide,” including “the majority of 33 national legislative assemblies,” more than “130 former world leaders” and “80 Nobel laureates have endorsed these principles.” He expressed gratitude that a majority in the House supports this resolution.
