Kevin Kiley, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 3rd district since 2023, has posted a series of statements on his Twitter account criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom and addressing the impacts of recent redistricting in his state.
On November 6, 2025, Kiley wrote, “There’s no use denying it: Gavin Newsom is now the Democratic frontrunner for President. However, when your signature issue is gerrymandering, it’s a candidacy built on sand.
California leads the nation in poverty, homelessness, and unemployment. That’s a hard record to defend.”
The following day, on November 7, Kiley continued his criticism by posting: “You can gerrymander California, but Californians still get to vote.
We overturned Newsom’s gas-car ban. We cut off his high-speed rail funding. We reversed his reckless crime policies. We beat his hand-picked candidate last year. And we’ll beat his extreme gerrymander next year.”
Later that same day, Kiley addressed questions about his political future after the passage of Proposition 50 and changes to congressional districts: “I want to thank everyone who has reached out about my plans for next year in the wake of Prop. 50. While I will be running for reelection to the House, it’s going to take time to figure out in which of the newly drawn districts. My current district has been chopped into six”.
Kiley’s remarks come amid significant political shifts in California. He succeeded John Garamendi as representative of California’s 3rd District and previously served in the California State Assembly from 2016 to 2022. Born in Sacramento in 1985 and currently residing in Rocklin, Kiley holds degrees from Harvard University (BA) and Yale University (JD).
Redistricting following Proposition 50 has significantly altered district boundaries within California—a process that often raises concerns about gerrymandering among lawmakers and constituents alike.
