Kevin Kiley, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 3rd district since 2023, has used his social media platform to criticize Governor Gavin Newsom on several policy fronts in a series of posts published August 22 and 23, 2025.
On August 22, Kiley accused Newsom of opposing an initiative aimed at addressing crime and resisting federal efforts related to public safety in Washington D.C. He wrote, “Last year Newsom opposed our initiative to make crime illegal again in every way possible. We won nearly 70 percent of the vote. Yet he’s learned nothing. He’s now fighting President Trump’s efforts to spare DC residents from murders and carjackings.”
Later that day, Kiley challenged Newsom’s statements regarding California’s Independent Redistricting Commission, alleging dishonesty about the governor’s position and urging congressional action. He stated on August 22: “Newsom claims he was in favor of the Independent Redistricting Commission. This is a lie. The CA Democratic Party led the campaign against it and Newsom has been looking for any pretext to abolish it. Speaker Johnson can stop him by bringing my bill to the Floor.”
In another post dated August 23, Kiley criticized Newsom for taking credit for improvements in homelessness that Kiley asserts the governor tried to prevent. Referring to a legal dispute over encampment clearances, he said: “Newsom is taking credit for an improvement in homelessness he actively tried to prevent. I asked the Supreme Court to overturn a disastrous 9th Circuit decision so our communities can clear encampments. Newsom asked for the decision to remain. The Court took my side.”
Kiley’s criticisms come as part of his ongoing tenure as a federal legislator after previously serving in the California State Assembly from 2016 until joining Congress in 2023 (source: Kevin Kiley biography). Born in Sacramento in 1985 and currently residing in Rocklin, Kiley holds degrees from Harvard University (BA) and Yale University (JD).
