Kevin Kiley, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 3rd district since 2023, has posted a series of critical tweets regarding Governor Gavin Newsom’s handling of state issues such as wildfire response, homelessness, and overall governance.
On January 7, 2026, Kiley cited an NPR investigation in his criticism of the governor’s fire mitigation efforts: “An NPR investigation found that Newsom ‘slashed’ Cal Fire’s budget and exaggerated the fire mitigation work he’d done by ‘an astounding 690 percent.’ Now, a year after the tragic LA fires, his failures continue. Rebuilding has started on just 3 percent of the homes lost.”
The following day, January 8, Kiley commented on Governor Newsom’s upcoming State of the State Address: “Today Newsom will deliver a State of the State Address declaring that ‘California leads the nation.’ For once, the Governor is correct. California leads the nation in: fraud, unemployment, poverty, homelessness, illiteracy, gas prices, electricity costs, debt, and outmigration.”
On January 9, Kiley referenced a state audit related to homelessness funding: “Let’s quote from the actual audit (which Newsom killed the first time I proposed it). The state ‘allocated nearly $24 billion for homelessness and housing during the last five fiscal years.’ And yet:
-‘has not regularly tracked statewide homelessness funding’
-‘does not”
Kiley’s recent posts reflect ongoing debates about public spending and policy outcomes in California. He previously served in the California State Assembly from 2016 to 2022 before joining Congress in 2023. Born in Sacramento in 1985 and currently residing in Rocklin at age 38, Kiley holds degrees from Harvard University (BA) and Yale University (JD).
