Kevin Kiley, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 3rd district since 2023, has recently posted a series of comments on social media regarding Governor Gavin Newsom’s approval ratings, partisan politics in California, and the recent federal government shutdown.
On November 9, 2025, Kiley shared his perspective on Governor Newsom’s popularity, stating: “Newsom has averaged about a -1 approval rating in California during his second term, which is 21 points below the state’s partisan baseline. That’s quite a bit worse than Trump or Biden’s national numbers ever got.”
The following day, Kiley addressed what he described as political challenges posed by Governor Newsom and emphasized the inclusivity of his own movement. On November 10, 2025, he wrote: “Our movement for sanity in California won’t be stopped by Newsom’s gerrymander. Just like it wasn’t stopped by his own staff member running against me last year.
In contrast to Newsom’s rabid partisanship, we’re fighting for all Californians. That’s why we can win under any map.”
Later that same day, Kiley commented on developments in Congress related to recent disruptions in federal governance: “It appears likely that both the 41-day shutdown of the federal government and the 53-day absence of the House of Representatives will end this week.
This is good news. But neither should have ever happened.”
Kiley’s remarks come as he continues his tenure in Congress after replacing John Garamendi in 2023. Before serving at the federal level, Kiley was a member of the California State Assembly from 2016 to 2022. Born in Sacramento in 1985 and currently residing in Rocklin, Kiley holds degrees from Harvard University (BA) and Yale University (JD).
