Kevin Kiley, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 3rd district, shared his views on several issues via social media posts on June 6 and June 7, 2025. His comments focused on Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent proposals and actions concerning high-speed rail funding and federal tax withholding.
On June 6, Kiley criticized Governor Newsom’s proposal to allocate $130 billion to the High-Speed Rail project by stating “Newsom says we should spend $130 billion on High-Speed Rail because it ‘creates jobs.’ We could also create jobs by paying people to do nothing (which we’ve done) or to dig and re-fill holes (essentially HSR). A better idea: create jobs building something useful, like roads.”
Later that day, Kiley expressed disapproval of another statement from Newsom regarding taxes. He noted that “Gavin Newsom is now threatening to withhold taxes from the federal government, which could only be accomplished by seceding from the union. I do not agree with the Governor’s position; I believe California should remain part of the United States.”
On June 7, Kiley further commented on this tax issue by explaining that “Newsom’s threat to stop paying taxes to the federal government makes zero sense since California doesn’t pay taxes to the federal government. Our citizens do. Perhaps he means he’ll default on the $20 billion federal loan he took out. Oh wait, he already did that.”
Kevin Kiley has been serving in Congress since replacing John Garamendi in 2023. Prior to his congressional service, he was a member of the California State Assembly from 2016 until 2022. Born in Sacramento in 1985, Kiley resides in Rocklin and holds degrees from Harvard University and Yale University.
