Kevin Kiley, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 3rd district, has publicly criticized Governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting proposal through a series of posts on social media.

On August 21, 2025, Kiley claimed that voters from across the political spectrum are against Newsom’s plan and accused the governor of misleading ballot language. He wrote, “A supermajority of voters – Democrats, Republicans, and Independents – oppose Newsom’s Redistricting Sham. But he has a plan to overcome this: Fraud. His ballot language says a Yes vote ‘retains’ the independent commission when it actually overthrows the commission.”

Later that day, Kiley challenged Governor Newsom to a public debate regarding the proposal. In his post, he stated, “Since I am the number one target of Newsom’s Redistricting Sham, I invite him to debate me on the merits of his proposal. I’ll even let him use all-caps notes from the ‘Governor Newsom Press Office’ team.”

On August 22, 2025, Kiley suggested that defeating this measure would impact Governor Newsom’s potential presidential ambitions: “When we beat this, Newsom’s presidential campaign will be over before it begins.”

Kevin Kiley has represented California’s 3rd District in Congress since 2023 after previously serving in the California State Assembly from 2016 to 2022. Born in Sacramento in 1985 and currently residing in Rocklin, Kiley is an alumnus of Harvard University and Yale Law School.
