Placer County announced on April 2 that it will host a free medication take-back event on April 25, while also reminding residents of permanent, year-round disposal options for unused or expired medications.
The announcement highlights the importance of safe medication disposal to prevent accidental poisoning, misuse, and environmental harm. Residents are encouraged to use these services instead of flushing or throwing away unwanted medicines.
According to the county, dozens of free drop box locations are available across Placer County, many at local pharmacies. Residents can find a convenient site nearby using available resources. Additionally, free mail-in disposal options are offered for both prescription and over-the-counter medications as well as veterinary drugs. To request a pre-paid mail-back package, residents can complete an online form or call (844) 4-TAKE-BACK; instructions come with all mail-back services.
The next biannual take-back event is scheduled for Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with collection sites hosted by local law enforcement in collaboration with youth organizations, utilities, public health agencies and schools throughout the county—from Roseville to North Lake Tahoe. The sites will accept prescription and over-the-counter medications, veterinary drugs and vaping devices (with batteries removed). Residents are asked to bring items in their original containers and remove personal information before dropping them off.
Placer County officials say they will continue offering these events twice a year alongside permanent disposal solutions.
