Placer County’s Tahoe City Complete Streets Improvements Project has received $1.4 million in funding from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA), following a decision at the agency’s recent governing board meeting. The project is one of six transportation or transit improvement initiatives to be awarded funding by TRPA this year.

The initiative, developed in collaboration with Caltrans, aims to enhance pedestrian safety and traffic flow at the intersection of North Lake Boulevard and Grove Street in Tahoe City. Planned improvements include updated signalization and upgrades to accessibility features.

Placer County has engaged a consultant team to move forward with project approval, initial environmental documentation, and preliminary engineering, as required by Caltrans standards. In addition to the latest grant, the project has previously secured $254,000 from a Federal Highway Administration Surface Transportation Block Grant and $500,000 from Placer County’s Traffic Mitigation Fee Program. Further funding will be needed before construction can commence.

“We’re pleased to receive this funding from TRPA because this intersection experiences a significant volume of pedestrian activity, traffic and congestion,” said Placer County Department of Public Works Deputy Director Jared Deck. “We hope to begin construction for this project in 2026.”

This year, TRPA allocated a total of $11.4 million in federal and state funds through its Regional Grant Program for projects that improve safety, expand outdoor recreation access, and help reduce vehicle miles traveled within the Lake Tahoe Basin. Acting as both the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization and Regional Transportation Planning Agency, TRPA distributes these funds every two years to projects identified as priorities under Connections 2050—the region’s long-term transportation plan. These efforts are intended to promote safer roads, cleaner air and water, improved transit services, and greater mobility options for residents and visitors.
