State Senator Roger Niello has provided updates on recent legislative activities and community events in his latest newsletter.

Niello, alongside Assemblyman Joe Patterson, joined the family of Sergeant Nicole Gee to mark the installation of memorial highway signs in her honor. Sgt. Gee, a native of Roseville, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2017 and was killed during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 26, 2021. “I was a proud principal co-author of Assembly Concurrent Resolution 126 last year to designate a portion of Interstate 80 as the Sgt. Nicole Gee U.S. Marine Corps Memorial Highway,” Niello said. He noted that after unanimous support from both chambers, Caltrans assisted with procuring and displaying the signs.

On legislative matters, Niello addressed efforts at the State Capitol related to redistricting. He stated that he worked to oppose what he described as an attempt by the majority party to pass new congressional district maps through the legislature, bypassing California’s independent redistricting commission. According to Niello: “Yesterday, the redistricting shenanigan exposed the majority party’s true intent: to dismantle a voter-approved system. Democratic leaders, who were opposed to the voter-approved independent redistricting commission from the get-go, are using this opportunity as a strategic first step toward abolishing it.” He added: “Politicians shouldn’t override the will of the voters and draw their own gerrymandered districts.” The link to his Senate floor speech is available at https://youtu.be/6_yLyPRttFU.

In community engagement news, Niello participated as a speaker at Herald Fire Prevention Council’s first Community Breakfast where about 40 residents discussed fire prevention and insurance issues. As Vice Chair of the Senate Insurance Committee, he answered questions about state legislature activities and expressed appreciation for community collaboration during such events.
