Senator Roger Niello used his Twitter account in early February 2026 to share information about unclaimed property in California and to respond to a controversial social media post by the President. Niello, who represents the state of California in the Senate, posted about state-held non-real estate assets and condemned an online post made by the President.
On February 3, 2026, Niello wrote: “Each year, various types of non-real estate property are handed over to the state when businesses cannot reach the rightful owners. These assets include bank accounts, safe-deposit box contents, stocks, mutual funds, utility deposits, etc. Check on https://t.co/fJOhQsFu3m. 1/2 https://t.co/7rwNX7rVa6”. In a follow-up tweet on the same day, he added: “California State Controller’s Office (@CAController) has an instructional video on how to claim your property: https://t.co/2Bxv1GhjT8. 2/2”.
Two days later, on February 6, 2026, Senator Niello commented on a Truth Social post by the President involving former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama. He stated: “The President’s Truth Social post of the Obamas is horrifically racist and I condemn it in the strongest possible way.”
Unclaimed property laws in California require businesses to turn over certain types of financial assets to the state if they have been inactive or unclaimed for a specified period. The California State Controller’s Office manages these assets and provides resources for individuals to check and reclaim their property through official channels such as instructional videos.
Senator Niello’s condemnation of racist content reflects ongoing public concern regarding statements from public officials on social media platforms.
