Senator Roger Niello has voiced concerns on social media regarding the Capitol Annex Project, highlighting issues of transparency and accountability. In a series of posts dated December 17, 2025, Niello commented on the ongoing public discussions about the project and questioned the adequacy of information being shared.
In his first post, Niello stated, “After years of inquiries, it is nice to see my colleagues taking opportunities to talk to the public about the Capitol Annex Project. However, this interview raises more questions than it answers.” (December 17, 2025).
He continued by emphasizing public expectations for clarity in resource management: “People understand the need to invest in aging historic buildings like our very own State Capitol and its annex. What the public is asking for is transparency around where the money is going and how resources are being managed.” (December 17, 2025).
Addressing project delays and financial overruns, Niello wrote: “After years of delays & escalating costs, blaming past decisions and circumstances is not acceptable. What is needed is accountability and an open look at what this project will cost. I look forward to continually being informed as this project moves toward the finish line.” (December 17, 2025).
The Capitol Annex Project has experienced multiple delays and rising expenses over several years. The effort involves significant renovations to California’s State Capitol building complex with a focus on modernizing infrastructure while preserving historical elements.
Calls for increased oversight have grown amid concerns from lawmakers and members of the public about budget transparency and effective management throughout large-scale state construction projects.
