Senator Roger Niello, a Republican representing California’s 6th Senate District, has recently voiced opposition to legislation and actions related to redistricting and parental rights in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter).
On August 20, 2025, Senator Niello stated his stance against Assembly Bill 495, writing: “I already voted against AB 495 in the Senate Judiciary Committee and will continue to stop this dangerous bill from moving forward. #CaLeg #ParentalRights”.
The following day, August 21, 2025, he commented on Democratic leaders’ approach to the state’s independent redistricting commission: “Dem leaders, who were opposed to the voter-approved independent redistricting commission from the get go, are using this opportunity as a strategic first step toward abolishing it. Politicians shouldn’t override the will of the voters and draw their own gerrymandered districts.”
In a separate post on the same day, he added: “This redistricting shenanigan is exposing the majority party’s true intent: to dismantle a voter-approved system.”
California’s independent redistricting commission was established by voters through Proposition 11 in 2008 and Proposition 20 in 2010. The commission is tasked with drawing legislative district boundaries instead of state lawmakers, aiming to reduce partisan gerrymandering and increase public trust in electoral processes. Over time, some political figures have questioned or sought changes to its structure or authority.
AB 495 is among several bills that have generated debate regarding parental rights and educational policies within California. Legislators have been divided along party lines over such measures.
