Senator Roger Niello has raised concerns on social media regarding legislative procedures and redistricting in California, as well as the implications of Assembly Bill 495. In a series of posts on August 19 and August 20, 2025, Niello addressed what he described as actions by the majority party that could affect transparency and public oversight.
On August 19, Niello stated: “The majority party drafted new congressional districts behind closed doors with D.C.-based political operatives to undermine the work of California’s citizen-led commission in charge of redistricting. 1/2” On the same day, he continued: “Today, I sent a letter to the Senate Desk to limit procedural maneuvering by the majority party and their effort to reduce the time these bills are available for public scrutiny. Politicians shouldn’t choose their voters. 2/2”
In another post dated August 20, Niello commented on his participation at the State Capitol: “It was my honor to join the passionate advocates at the State Capitol yesterday in opposition to Assembly Bill 495. This bill raises significant concerns about child safety and could undermine parental rights by opening dangerous loopholes in custody transfers.”
California’s redistricting process is managed by an independent citizens’ commission established to create fair legislative boundaries without direct influence from elected officials or political parties. The process aims to increase transparency and public trust in how electoral districts are drawn.
Assembly Bill 495 has generated debate within California’s legislature over its potential impact on child custody arrangements and parental rights. Opponents argue that it may introduce vulnerabilities into custody transfer protocols.
