Senator Roger Niello, a member of the California State Senate, posted several messages on his Twitter account addressing both personal loss and state policy matters.
On January 6, 2026, Niello expressed condolences regarding the death of Doug LaMalfa. In one post, he wrote: “I am heartbroken to hear about the passing of my dear friend, Doug LaMalfa. He was one of the most down-to-earth and passionate public servants I have known, and it was an honor to serve with him in the Assembly and continue our lifelong friendship. 1/2”. In a follow-up message on the same date, he added: “He possessed incredible charisma while being unconditionally caring towards his constituents and colleagues. I am thinking of Doug’s family and everyone in our community that his kind soul has touched. 2/2”.
Later in the week, on January 9, 2026, Niello commented on California’s fiscal policies following the release of the governor’s budget proposal. He stated: “The governor’s budget proposal feels as though the state is running in place. The state is spending more without achieving meaningful progress. Californians are tired of running in place and never feeling like they can catch up. Press release: https://t.co/qQ6TQ1eGMN. #CABudget”.
Doug LaMalfa served as a U.S. Representative for California’s 1st congressional district before his passing in early January 2026.
Niello has represented portions of Sacramento County in the California State Senate since December 2022.
