SACRAMENTO CITY COLLEGE: Spring 2021 Athletics Update

Sports

Sacramento City College issued the following announcement on Dec. 15

We know that this has been an incredibly difficult time for all of our student athletes and appreciate how badly everyone wants to return to conditioning, practices, and competition. Unfortunately, the public health conditions in our region and around the state have worsened dramatically in the past several weeks, erasing progress that we had made in combatting this virus in the spring and summer.

As a result, Sacramento City College and the rest of the Los Rios colleges have made the very difficult decision to cancel all Early Spring sports (including all sports originally scheduled to take place in Fall and Winter seasons).

At Sacramento City College, that includes:

  • Basketball, Men's
  • Basketball, Women's
  • Cross Country, Men's
  • Cross Country, Women's
  • Football
  • Golf, Women's
  • Soccer, Women's
  • Volleyball, Women's
  • Wrestling, Men's
  • Water Polo, Women's
We remain optimistic that, as public health conditions improve, we will be able to begin resuming activities. College and district leadership have already announced that we will resume outdoor in-person conditioning and training when Sacramento County once again returns to the "Red" tier based on the statewide reopening blueprint.

The Big 8 Conference, including Sacramento City College, has yet to make a decision about the status of late spring sports and we remain hopeful that the widespread availability of the COVID-19 vaccine will improve conditions to the point where we are able to resume team activities and competition at that time. Sacramento City College will make a decision about late spring sports prior to the CCCAA's late February deadline.

We understand how incredibly disappointing this news is to so many of our student athletes, just as it is to our coaches, administrators, and staff. Above all else, Sacramento City College is committed to keeping our student athletes, coaches, and staff safe and healthy, and we look forward to returning to competition as soon as possible.
