Representative Tom McClintock, along with several members of the California congressional delegation, has sent a letter to President Joe Biden urging him not to proceed with the establishment of the proposed Range of Light National Monument. The proposal involves redesignating over 1.4 million acres of federal land, including the Sierra National Forest and the San Joaquin River Gorge.
The letter is co-signed by Representatives Doug LaMalfa, Kevin Kiley, Vince Fong, David Valadao, Jay Obernolte, and Darrell Issa. It outlines concerns regarding the potential impacts of such a designation on local communities and economies.
The letter states: "We write to express our strong opposition to the proposed Range of Light National Monument, which would redesignate over 1.4 million acres of federal land, including the entirety of the Sierra National Forest and the San Joaquin River Gorge."
It references the Antiquities Act of 1906 that allows for national monument designations on federal lands containing historic or scientific interest but emphasizes that these should be confined to "the smallest area compatible with proper care and management." The letter argues that Presidents have often interpreted this act broadly.
The signatories highlight opposition from local stakeholders who believe that decreased access due to the designation could harm local economies and increase environmental regulations that might hinder forest fire prevention efforts. They argue: "This designation would be a gross government overreach," calling on President Biden not to establish it due to its potentially devastating effects.
They conclude by thanking President Biden for his consideration and offering further contact for any questions.
