Kevin Kiley, a current U.S. Congress member representing California's 3rd district, shared his views through a series of tweets on April 14 and 15, 2025. Each tweet touched on significant issues faced by the state of California, ranging from sports policies, educational integrity, to healthcare funding. Kiley, who previously served in the California State Assembly, brings attention to these matters through his public commentary.
On April 14, 2025, Kiley commented on California Governor Gavin Newsom's stance on gender equality in sports. He stated that "Gavin Newsom said it's unfair to let men play women's sports – then promptly reaffirmed the state's policy of letting men play women's sports." Kiley indicated that this policy has resulted in a federal civil rights investigation against California, potentially threatening the state's funding.
The following day, on April 15, 2025, Kiley questioned Harvard University's track record in upholding free speech and ethical leadership. He criticized the institution by asking, "Give me a break. Where was this high-mindedness when Harvard ranked dead last out of 251 colleges for protecting free speech?" He also noted that Harvard "gets $9 billion in federal funding," implying a disconnect between the financial support and the values allegedly upheld by the institution.
Later on the same day, Kiley addressed the financial challenges facing California's Medicaid system. He argued that "the cost of providing full coverage for illegal immigrants has driven Medicaid insolvent in California." In his view, Governor Newsom's request for a legislative bailout, rather than addressing the underlying policy, represented "the absolute height of irresponsibility."
